Tea Towels and Coffee Cups

I spent this week in Birmingham with thebobbinbug (my daughter the super busy new mom and apron crafter)!  She was trying to finish an order for 8 beautiful ruffled aprons...while at the same time her very active 6-month-old, Claire, was busy crawling everywhere and learning how to stand up in the crib!  Nicole is so her mother's daughter with the whole burning the candle at both ends...so, feeling somewhat to blame, I felt it was only fair that I go up and help out : ).  We hit all the necessary stores including the largest JoAnn Fabric store I've ever seen!  After gathering supplies we spent one whole day crafting...I made a bulletin board and matching lamp shade for her classroom (more later on how to make the super cute bulletin board).  She made curtains for her classroom and lined curtains for her sister's dorm room and managed to begin the process of making the aprons.  In between we played with Claire and took some videos and pictures of her doing her thing! Chelsea and Katelyn joined us in Birmingham and we spent one day shopping at some of our favorite stores.  When I arrived back in Panama City I was just a little tired and really enjoyed my new coffee cups from Anthropologie...it's the little things!

...The Rest of the Story!

With Barcelona covered I can now move on and talk about other great memories we made on this trip. Our time in Rome was very busy and memorable, with Katelyn studying the map to figure out where we were and where the dang Spanish Steps got moved to (I swear they moved them)! In our "walk about" we climbed the hills of ancient Rome, stopped by the Trevi Fountain where the girls threw coins and made wishes, had a snack at Piazza Navona, and toured the Pantheon (all while under the influence of jet-lag)! Finding the quaint bridge at sunset lifted everyone's spirits and then finding the cute Ristorante complete with checkered tablecloths where we had our first official Italian dinner was the perfect end to our first day. The next day was fun-filled with a double-decker hop on/hop off bus which took us all over Rome (didn't see the Spanish Steps)! We visited the Colosseum and tried, in vain, to avoid the parasol vendors who literally chased the girls about until Rich finally bought a parasol!! Last, but not least, we visited Vatican City where we toured the museums and Sistine Chapel (led by the best guide of all our vacation tours...Adam). It was non-stop, exhausting, and fabulous!

Sunday afternoon we boarded our cruise ship...Navigator of the Seas. We had a great week cruising the Mediterranean, but we definitely had our favorites...such as Monaco and Palma de Mallorca. Monaco was unbelievably beautiful and flower-filled and actually rather quaint. After a very scenic drive along the coastline of the Mediterranean, we left the bus and walked through the village, stopping at the cathedral where Grace Kelly was both married and is now buried. We saw the royal palace (but no royals) and explored by ourselves a bit ending with the gardens that overlooked the sea. It was a magical place. Monte Carlo, by comparison, was much more energetic...with more people(and probably all those people were hyped up waiting for the casino to open, hence the energy)... had very upscale shopping...and chic sidewalk cafes. It was interesting to travel the roads of the Grand Prix race (confession time...I've never even seen that race). For me the real gem was the little town of Villefranche where our ship was tendered just off the coast. It was a beautiful little village with cobblestoned streets filled with great clothing boutiques, home decor shops, and cute gift shops! We ate lunch there in an outdoor cafe thinking how nice it would be if we really could eat outdoors in Florida in the summer (and not sweat)! After lunch we decided to do some shopping and, in my defense, I will tell you that it was the only time we actually did any shopping during the trip(other than for postcards or pringles)! At the end of the afternoon we found ourselves at yet another sidewalk cafe where we had a cold drink, read a newspaper (Rich and Chelsea) and people watched (Kate and I). Finally, we bid France farewell and headed back to the ship. Maybe, someday I can return and do some more exploring...

Palma de Mallorca is an island off the coast of Spain and I think it was Rich's favorite stop. Burnt out on excursions (Barcelona was the day before) we opted for something different and rented segways and rode around Palma for the afternoon. It was a lot of fun and not without its comical moments...Rich trying to go up the hill...me taking a picture of Shrek and donkey (he quickly turned his back and pointed at the collection cup...oops)...segwaying (is that even a word) through very crowded streets with motorbikes and pedestrians and cars. None of us crashed or took out anyone so we considered the day a big success!! Our visit there was short so maybe Rich and I will have to go back someday and spend more time there...

The most amusing day had to be our day at Poetta beach on the coast of Sardinia! This was suggested to us as a must-do...so we did! We sunscreened and gathered hats, sunglasses, novels, beach towels and took a cab to this very popular destination. We rented our chairs and umbrellas got all settled at which point Rich leans over and says..."Is that what I think that is?" "What," I say looking about...the middle-age-very-tan-why-aren't-you-at-work-on-a-Friday Italian men in speedos...who were rubbing oil on each others' backs? The Italian family from the cruise ship (I know this because they had towels that said Royal Caribbean) who were changing clothes OUTSIDE (albeit underneath the towels...but honestly, there were changing cabanas about 20 yards away)? No no...I see what you are talking about and yes, that is a topless woman lounging on a chair...talking to her much older boyfriend/husband!! Oh and look there's another and another and some more over there!! To say that my very conservative southern gentleman husband was slightly scarred doesn't even describe. But let me explain it this way...Rich can't sit still for more than 10 minutes...he likes to do and see and is not opposed to getting lost for a short period of time (he is Mary Dodd's son)...but he didn't move from that chair for an hour, and read his book with great interest (I am certain he was too afraid of what he might happen upon). The girls were with us on this adventure and the only comment I heard was when some topless girls came bobbing out of the water and one of my girls remarked..."seriously"...

On the ship we always found things to do to have fun...ping pong games (Rich and I always won)...shuffle board...pac man...eating at Johnny Rockets (singing and dancing waiters)...daily sudoku challenges (Kate always won!)...mystery dinner theater (loads of fun)...watching world cup soccer in the sports bar and the Metropolis theater with people from all over the world (Chelsea loved every minute of it)...hanging out by the pool reading, playing solitaire, and people watching...trying the "drink of the day"...movies at the Metropolis...visits to the coffee bar and Ben and Jerry's...You get the idea...there was always something to do!!

So...the vacation is over...the reliving it...over...next at the Dodd house...senior portraits...summer reading (Kate saved the best for last Ha Ha)...moving in plans for Auburn...No. Wait, summer isn't over yet!! So I am off to enjoy some summer fun right here in my hometown.

Ciao~

Here it is...the story of Barcelona

Ok...this is going to be a looooong post.  I know blogger 101 says...do not go on and on in a post...as no one, not  even your mother, wants the three day version. Well settle back in your chair and get comfy cause I'm ready to tell the story of our visit to Barcelona;  first I have to set the scene for the crime...so to speak.  We are on day seven of our vacation.  We've already spent two and a half days seeing everything possible in Rome.  On the cruise we've been to Genoa, Italy and Villefranche, France (Monaco).  When I woke up that morning and stood on our balcony with Barcelona spread out before me I just kept thinking...there's nothing here I want to see. I was tired and really would have preferred a day of doing nothing...but we had already purchased the excursion tickets (something I always do before leaving home), so off the ship we went!!

Excursions are the double-edged sword of cruise life.  The tours take you to the most historic or exotic or adventurous places that location has to offer, all you have to do is show up with your sea pass and excursion ticket, but there are negative aspects to them (maybe the main one being that someone else is in control of where you go and what you do)!  After years of doing guided tours (both with my family and when I headed school trips to NYC and Boston) I have learned that what goes on inside the bus and within the group while trekking around is as entertaining and educational as the cathedral, ancestral home, or museum that we actually paid to see! All kinds of people go on tours...there are families much like mine in which mama is excited about the upcoming day and all the picture taking opportunities and maybe some interesting shopping...dad is studying something off in the distance over his left shoulder as if he has been put in charge of the escape route...and the kids, no matter what the nationality, all have a similar body language (I'll leave it at that).  There are newlyweds with the aura of total bliss around them.  They could be looking at a backed-up sewer and they would smile and look at each other as if to say "Isn't this wonderful." They take pictures of each other on their cell phones and don't even bother to stand in front of the subject of interest...people tend to volunteer to take their picture together (for the scrapbooks sake)! One such couple wandered into a Louis Vuitton store in Monte Carlo and showed back up at the bus with a very large bag (and big smiles on the bride's face). Which then brings me to the unmarried young couple...they tend to be much more subdued, especially if the girl has zoomed in on Mr. and Mrs. "just married" (I could give some advice here...but whatever).  Next there is the elderly couple who come prepared to have a good time but they bring provisions because...well...they never know what might happen during their time away from the ship. They tend to sit at the front of the bus...use the overhead bin first thing in the morning (BEFORE shopping) and they always ask how to use the headsets before the guide has done the headcount and introduced the trusty bus driver!  There are also those seasoned travelers, such as my father-in-law, who bring a bottle of water, a snack, a rain poncho (folded neatly in a one-inch square), a map of the area, a camera, and some money (maybe a credit card)  all of which neatly fits into a pickpocket-proof bag!! Last on the bus is the multi-generational family...great grandparents down to toddler...they have all sorts of good stuff  including the stroller that no longer closes properly (they are planning on throwing it out at the end of the trip) and the cooler of food because the great grandparents and the toddlers are on the same diet...so the bus driver has to open the luggage compartment underneath the bus at each and every stop.  Chelsea took a picture of one very worn out grandpa (or probably a great grandpa) who was sitting in the stroller outside of the casino at Monte Carlo...while great grandma followed the toddler down the hill!!

Okay...so the bus is loaded and we are off for several hours of cathedrals..city gates...cobble stone piazzas...etc. I am a travel guide at heart so I enjoy a bit of poking around and hearing a good story about the history of a place...but even I get overloaded... just imagine my husband and children!!!  Rich is constantly MIA on a tour.  He likes about 2 minutes of explanation and that's really only if he's actually interested in the subject (often times he can be seen with the earphones to his headset dangling along beside him)... then he's off exploring. So of course I am always looking around to make certain that he notices when we move on...once a teacher, always a teacher.   The girls stick together AND have been sufficiently warned by me of the downside of going missing in a foreign country (this lecture was so much easier after the movie Taken came out)...so I can easily locate them, earphones in place and coma-like expressions on their faces (I have pictures). And so here we are traveling through the crowded city streets of Barcelona while the tour guide first explains how to use the headsets and then repeats several times to turn them off and save the batteries for when we aren't on the bus (and she isn't droning on with a microphone)!
I am tired and barely listening...I keep thinking random things like...how did my  best friend's daughter traverse through Barcelona a mere two weeks ago with her friends from the air force academy?...do we have transportation from the cruise ship to the airport on Sunday?...how long is this tour?...does it involve getting off the bus?....

Our stops that morning were at two cathedrals...the Barcelona Cathedral and the Cathedral of the Holy Family...and I think the Olympic Park built back in the early 90's.  Here's the thing, I actually like going into cathedrals...they are architectural amazements to say the least.  I just wasn't feeling it...I totally zoned out on the story about the 13 year-old girl and the reason why there are always 13 geese in the courtyard of the cathedral????  I tried and tried to find a picture to take....but other than birdseed spelling Barcelona on the steps leading to the cathedral and the actual geese...nothing. I would take a picture and delete it.  Same thing at the second cathedral that has been under construction forever and isn't slated to be finished for 30 more years (I do remember the guide saying something about the pope visiting this September to bless the church and maybe they would start having mass...but don't quote me on that).  We were inside a gift shop (a scheduled 8 minute shopping stop) after which we would be walking to the back side of the cathedral to continue the narration when I looked at Rich and the girls and said "Isn't there a Starbucks across the street?"  I told the tour guide we were going to get coffee and we would meet up with them at the bus...she looked at me as if...well let's just leave it at she looked at me.  We unplugged from the headsets, went to Starbucks got some caffeine, and happily stood waiting for our group and our bus to happen along.  We were actually right across the street from the cathedral so we did look at it a bit more and nicknamed it the "fruit basket church."

Last stop was the park which actually had some great overlooks to the harbor and the huge city and yes the spires of the cathedrals were easily seen. We took some pictures and ate some Pringles (our go-to snack  on this trip...bought at the roadside vendor). I was very happy when we boarded the bus to go back to the ship.  I sat looking at...and deleting most of the pictures I had taken that morning.  Oh well, I thought, I don't have to fall in love with every place I visit!!  I put my camera in my bag and realized...no wallet...this can't be...I say something to Rich at the same time pulling stuff out of my bag and tossing it on his lap...Katelyn's bag of popcorn (bought at the park for the movie that night)...camera...water bottle...post card of one of the cathedrals bought by Rich to send to his parents...reading glasses...journal...pens...chewing gum...NO PINK AND BLACK WITH ELEPHANTS VERA BRADLEY WALLET...okay maybe it fell out of the bag and is on the floor of the bus...everyone look....yes I mean everyone. The tour guide gets on the microphone and explains that I've lost my wallet and can everyone look under their seat (it could have slid...) to which someone asks "what does it look like?"  I don't know why but Rich couldn't let go of this comment and still has  witty comebacks to that question!! Still no wallet and then the advice begins...call the ship immediately someone could use your sea pass and get on the ship (and do what...eat at the buffet?)...you better call the states first and cancel everything...you should carry a bag with a zipper next time (I know this...I am always super careful...ask my children).  So I sit quietly (shedding a few tears) and think about at which church did someone notice me and decide I was an easy target and then distracted me somehow and deftly lifted my wallet out of the bottom of my very large bag?  It doesn't matter, it's gone. I had three credit cards, one driver's license (yes...the same driver's license I wrote about in a post last spring), and probably $75.00 in American money...no euros. Back at the port I had to fill out a police report with a young policeman speaking only Spanish (he said he knew a little English but I don't remember hearing any). Why am I doing this...he can't even operate the copy machine to give me a copy of the report...but oh yea...I am doing this in case someone charges like a bajillion dollars on my AX , I will have proof that it wasn't me...I am starting to get a migraine...

Finally we are back on the ship...after getting a new sea pass I go to the room to take something for the headache that is threatening...Rich stays down at the reception desk on deck 5  where they have placed the call for him back to one of the credit card companies...An hour later, I feel better; all cards are cancelled.  Fortunately, our AX cards have different numbers so we still had his card to use and my smart husband had cash in the safe...and so he looked at me and said "It's done...it's not important...we still have 4 days of a great vacation to enjoy...let's go beat the girls at ping pong!"

We did enjoy the rest of the day and watched the World Cup match that night (which ironically was Spain against Germany and I ended up cheering for Spain in their win)!!  So, while I have no great desire to visit Spain in the future I figure that is okay...there are places I've never been yet and places I absolutely have to go back and experience again.  I will leave Spain to those that are passionate about it.  Back at home for a little over a week I have already received replacement credit cards (yep, those companies are smart...they don't want me to be without for very long)!  I was also able to order a replacement license (of course it hasn't come in yet...and suddenly everyone wants to see my license when I write a check or use my new credit cards...). Don't you know...this is my life : )

Weekend Ramblings...

Nicole spent the weekend at the condo with her two college friends Elizabeth and Shannon.  The three had tons to catch up on...and so we got some bonus time with Claire while they hung out at the beach and went to dinner in the evenings. Now it is Sunday afternoon and I want to curl up and take a nap...however,our pastor's wife has just published her 4th book... FLASHPOINT ...and I want to go to the book signing this afternoon buy her book...have her sign it...and then beat a hasty path to Starbucks to get a caramel white chocolate mocha frappuccino...and then relax the afternoon away reading a book written by someone I know...which is such a cool thing to me.

Tomorrow, however, is a day of reckoning for me and my lazy ways of summer!  I am getting on the scale and facing the music of too many plates of pasta while in Italy and yes... too many afternoon pick-me-ups at Starbucks : )... I am going to either a) rent out the extra 5 (may be 7 by now) pounds to someone,
or b) start exercising and stop eating!  I am serious about this or I wouldn't be writing about it here.  Someone said this is what happens when you "get older"...I no longer talk to that person (just kidding)...but I refuse to cave in to this mentality!! So I will pull out my funny-looking but very effective Skechers tennis shoes and hit the walking park in the morning and not go anywhere near Starbucks!! I will also be back to write more about our trip and I will tell the story of Barcelona and the pickpocket who now owns a very cute Vera Bradley travel wallet!

Seriously...did Chelsea just dish up a bowl of ice cream right in front of me...this is my life!!

Travel Agents and Cell Phones...Today's Reflection about Our Vacation

A few things instantly come to mind when I think about our recent trip to Europe...first, I am so glad that I have a travel agent that I have known for years who will let me put together the trip I want and then will go behind me and fill in the holes...make it run smoothly...etc.  Getting off of a 9 hour flight and walking into a foreign culture knowing that someone is standing in the reception area holding a sign that says DODD FAMILIA (okay...on a trip a couple years ago I think it said DODE...but I am used to my last name being butchered) relieves so much stress...And towards the end of the cruise when I realized how expensive the transfer from the cruise ship to the airport was gonna be if I booked it through the cruise line, I emailed back home and asked if she could set something up and Voila... that email saved us $120.00!!   I am a big advocate of the trusted travel agent and suggest everyone who travels find one and build that relationship!

Cell phones...to be honest we are a family of believers...we like easy access to everything and everyone via our cell phones.  But for the first time we didn't pre-order a phone for this trip because the whole world is techno-savvy right and surely there will be phones to rent in airports....NOPE...both the Atlanta and Rome airports were "out of" European rental phones!  Okay, no problem, our hotel has in room internet service....and if you are either a) Bill Gates or b) maybe not so jet lagged...you can figure it out and be chatting it up with your loved ones back home; this was not our experience!  Not to worry...we are in big cities we can just go into a cell phone store and purchase a cheap phone... speaking English only to an Italian kid (he might have been 22...he was wearing a Killers t-shirt and naive Rich and I like the band Killers and we like their music so we instantly feel a connection....but upon further inspection of the shirt we notice the "group members" are George Bush, Hitler, Saddam Hussein, and Osama Bin Laden...arrrgghh...but we need this phone we rationalize...).  So we purchase the cute little cheap phone...Rich even figures out how to change the language to English and life is good...but it came with only 10 minutes of time on the phone (this was quickly wiped out with one message left on Rich's parents' phone, one 6 minute update on Claire's latest achievements, and a 2 minute hey how are you to the boyfriend)....Not to worry we will find another of these Orange phone stores, buy more minutes, and then maybe Rich can call back to the office and check on life in the real world...not happening... (which was the main reason he wanted the phone...could he have had his blackberry set up for overseas use...yep...but then it's like he's not on vacation)...Not to worry...we can use the Internet cafe on the cruise ship, they only charge 55 cents a minute and it only takes about 6 minutes to log on and open up your email...but we can facebook chat with friends and family...NOPE!  All this to say that we didn't really need that much access to home...but it was frustrating at times and yet ended up being a mixed blessing in the end.  Not once during the entire trip did I have to make my "mom face" at dinner or on a tour (you know... the put the phone away and engage in the here and now face)! Rich got on the internet and checked his mail when he wanted and the girls usually checked facebook each night  to make certain the world was still turning on its axis!  We still have the cute little phone which I will research the next time we go overseas and see if we can get some use out of the $50.00 investment...if not we will go back to the tried and true method of renting a phone and having it shipped to our home before we leave!!

Enough food for thought for now...next installment will be about Barcelona...the day my billfold went missing!

Ciao

Michael Buble

Saw Michael Buble in concert last night in Pensacola and I LOVE HIM!  If you are a fan you know he has a smooth melodic voice, but wait a minute he can do more than just sing....he entertains.   His good-looking boyish charm, quick wit, and his love of being on the stage partying with his fans creates magic.  There was every age group from the 4 year old boy sitting behind us to the 60-something year old grandmother with her daughters and granddaughters dancing and taking pictures a few rows in front of us.

If you've never listened to his music...give him a try.  If you love his music, treat yourself and go see him in concert...you won't be disappointed!!

Europe ~ Great Memories Made

Our vacation to Europe was such a grand time for the four of us.  We relaxed, bonded, and played. Today it is back to reality...so much running through my mind and my washing machine tonight that it is hard to get my thoughts straight.  I will post a few of my favorite photos and when I get over jet lag I will be back and tell you all about some of the good times and the pickpocket that got my wallet in Barcelona!!   Ciao
